FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (REVISED)

8,158 Outstanding Ballots in SLC Mayoral Race Leaves Primary Still Too Close to Call.

New reports from the Salt Lake County Clerk’s Office estimate that at least 8,158 outstanding votes remain to be counted in the Salt Lake City mayoral election, which may affect the primary results.

Salt Lake City, August 14, 2019 — Today the Salt Lake County Clerk is filing a report to the Lt. Governor’s Office that will identify the number of outstanding votes to be counted in municipal races, including the Salt Lake City mayoral primary.

In coverage from the County Clerk’s office today, KUTV reported that the county-wide number is approximately 14,800 ballots and Salt Lake City still has at least 6,800 outstanding votes to be counted. Later, ABC4Utah reported that Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swenson said 8,158 ballots remain to be counted with another 683 ballots that need to evaluated as to their eligibility.

Currently, Salt Lake City Council Member Erin Mendenhall sits in first place while 109 votes separate the next two candidates, former State Senator Jim Dabakis and current State Senator Luz Escamilla. With 6,800 outstanding ballots those standings could easily change. Last night, Escamilla declared, “This election is not over yet,” and will continue to wait for the 8,158 outstanding ballots to be counted.

As she awaits for the next wave of vote totals tomorrow, Escamilla did make the following statement to her supporters and volunteers:

“While we await the final results of this election, I want to once again thank all my supporters and volunteers who have stood by me and my campaign. You have inspired me to run, have kept me going over these past few months, and are still keeping me optimistic about these outstanding ballots. However this race ends up, I feel good about the race we’ve run and the people who have made this race so rewarding.”

***This press release was revised from the original report of 6,800 outstanding ballots to the 8,158 figure reported later in the day.

All of this in spite of Debakis being a better and more qualified candidate? No thanks.
