FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sen. Luz Escamilla Releases Affordable Housing Plan for SLC, Says It’s More Comprehensive Than Opponent’s Plan.

Escamilla has said that affordable housing will require using all the tools available to the City and outlines those tools and strategies in her housing plan.

Salt Lake City, October 4, 2019 — Today, Senator Luz Escamilla released her affordable housing plan, stating that it offers a vision and a strategy for making real progress on the longstanding issue.

“We’ve seen that large, one-time funding efforts fail to make meaningful progress because we have focused on individual projects rather than a comprehensive strategy,” said Escamilla.

Her plan outlines a number of ways for the city to preserve existing affordable housing and funding new developments that include affordable housing. However, her plan goes further to advocate for the creation of a housing voucher, beefing up the city’s Community Land Trust to keep units affordable in perpetuity, and requiring new building standards to ensure new developments are sustainable.

Some of her proposals will require working with the Utah State Legislature, something Escamilla says she is best positioned to do given her record, her relationships and reputation on Capitol Hill.

Escamilla’s full housing plan is available on her website (luzformayor.com) and is attached to this release.
