Luz Escamilla Raises Women’s Issues in SLC Mayoral Race.
Surrounded by a crowd of prominent SLC women, Escamilla Says She’ll Be a Champion for Women in City Hall.
Salt Lake City, July 18, 2019 — Today State Senator and Salt Lake City mayoral candidate Luz Escamilla held a press conference on the steps of city hall. Surrounded by a number of notable Salt Lake City women who are advocates on various women’s issues, Escamilla promised to bring women’s issues to the forefront of her administration.
“Women’s issues are Salt Lake City issues. When women are elected the conversation changes. As mayor, these issues will be at the forefront of my administration,” Escamilla declared. “I have been a champion for women on the Hill and I will continue to be here at City Hall.”
Escamilla demonstrated her dominance in female endorsements in the mayoral race, touting a lengthy list of elected officials, business leaders, policy advocates and community leaders.
Offering their endorsement and highlighting various issues that affect women in Salt Lake City such as women’s health, domestic violence, and pay equity, several prominent women spoke to introduce Escamilla.
Speakers included: Annabel Sheinberg, East Bench resident and Planned Parenthood health educator; Judi Hilman, Avenues resident and healthcare advocate; Silvia Castro, Downtown resident and Executive Director of the Suazo Business Center; Brook Walrath, Downtown resident and advocate on infertility and women’s health; State Representative Angela Romero, who lives on the city’s westside; and former State Representative Rebecca Chavez-Houck, who lives in the Greater Avenues area.
Following the press conference, Escamilla said, “I am so grateful to have the support of all these amazing and powerful women. It shows how our message is connecting with women across our city and we’re happy to have this momentum heading into next week when ballots will begin to be delivered.”
